project
brief: |
Faces is an ambitious new (May '04) online social networking system which provides an easy, effective and enjoyable means of meeting new friends with similar interests.
A sophisticated large-scale backend delivers advanced functionality including instant messaging, flash-based videochat, and user-configurable profiles, photo albums, and blogs.
My role as lead designer / art director was to deliver a distinctive and visually appealing commercial interface to these features. It was vital that the front end be bandwidth-light and user-friendly in order to convert large volumes of traffic into active memberships. The final look-and-feel might be described as "iPod meets XP"...!
Further responsibilities encompassed:
- full branding of the product from scratch
- co-ordinating design of the animated flash-based tour pages
- development of the logo and typeface / icon standards, and:
- copywriting.
All of these tasks required a close working relationship with the backend dev team of 6 programmers, despite the fact we were all working remotely from different locations. The site was launched on time and budget and has proven an enormous success.

This product is going to be huge in terms of membership and revenue streams, as proven by a number of its less-functional, less-user friendly and less-well marketed predecessors...!
