project
brief:

BattleTrolls is a highly innovative multiplayer online trading card game coded entirely in Flash 4 and PHP/MySQL.

Players log-in at any time from around the world in order to trade cards, chat, and fight in real-time to earn new ranks on the global leaderboard and capture opponents' cards.

There are over 80 unique cards to collect, and the "Troll" or warrior cards, each with unique battle skills, can evolve into more powerful characters through victories in battle.

Extensive original artwork was created, including numerous character illustrations and renderings, plus a cohesive medieval-style interface metaphor and highly sophisticated ActionScript/PHP integration.

scope: 3 core sites, 7 key screens (battlescreen, battlechamber, negotiation, warrior's hall, statistics, army review, trollshop), 18 rank states, etc.
role: Project manager/ lead designer/ QA
launched: October 2001
technology: Coded entirely in Flash 4 and PHP/MySQL. Considering the inherent limitations of FLash 4 Actionscript and the extensive functionality of the game, this is a remarkable achievement.
notes:

BattleTrolls boasts an average 7,000 unique impressions every day, and a membership base in excess of 10,000 players.

The game uses a business model based on 90% free players and 10% full members. Full members pay an automated monthly access fee to receive a range of benefits including more cards of superior quality and the ability to resurrect and trade cards.
