Dark Blue Sea Pty. Ltd. is a dynamic Brisbane-based internet development
company focused on delivering a range of unique online services
to the global online marketplace.
When I joined the company, then known as Toast.com, my position
involved a variety of web and interactive media design projects,
plus responsibility for team leadership and creative direction.
This role soon evolved into that of Project Manager and by the
time the company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in late
2002, I had successfully managed the design, development, testing,
launch and commercial operation of several online products.
Main responsibilities:
- Web and interactive media design, primarily flash;
- Interface prototyping and usabilty design;
- Illustration, animation, and digital audio production;
- Creative direction, team leadership, and reporting;
- Project planning, documentation, and scheduling;
- Focus group testing and analysis and QA;
- Staff recruitment and performance appraisal;
- Management of Traffic Development team and their large network
of traffic sites producing revenue streams for subscription-based
products;
- Operational management, marketing and analysis; and
- Liaison with upper management, team training, motivation and
mentoring.

provide market research, strategic planning, organisational review
and interactive media services to large corporations and government
departments.
As multimedia consultant with MDP, my responsibilities were to
manage all interactive media and web development projects.
My primary responsibilities were to:
- Establish effective project briefs and budgets for clients;
- Write, edit and submit project proposals, documentation and
invoices;
- Plan, cost, schedule and manage project resources and timelines;
- Prototype, design, test, and deliver high-quality website solutions;
- Direct, motivate and co-ordinate other staff to meet deadlines;
- Liaise with clients, conduct presentations and write reports;
- Evaluate the impact of multimedia on clients’ marketing
strategies;
- Maintain industry contacts and an awareness of current issues;
and
- Promote McDonnell-Phillips as a provider of effective design
services.

Interactive media designer - ICE MEDIA
An integral part of the Bachelor of Multimedia degree is a 4-week
industry placement to introduce students to the commercial world
of multimedia. My duties at ICE MEDIA included:
- Designing the Global Arts Link
website;
- Designing the Queensland Schools Curriculum Committee (QSCC)
CD-ROM interface;
- Producing a digital video using a Media 100 edit suite for CTE
(broadcast on network TV across Asia); and
- Prototyping a series of new logo designs for the firm.
I declined a job offer at the conclusion of the placement in order
to continue working for McDonnell-Phillips in a more senior role.

Project Manager/lead designer
Blake Dawson Waldron Induction Programme
In the final year of my Multimedia Degree, I was elected project
manager/lead designer for a team of 6 students (Ubermedia) developing
an intranet-based interactive induction programme for one of Australia’s
largest law firms.
Blake Dawson Waldron has over 1400 employees and required a cost-effective
means of quickly training new staff in standard office procedures.
Our DHTML/Shockwave based interactive induction programme was designed
for delivery via the national intranet.
As project manager/lead designer I was responsible for overall
control of the project, creative direction, resource management
and allocation, client liaison, documentation, team co-ordination,
meeting deadlines and QA.
The final product, including the innovative "corporate espionage"
metaphor was demonstrated live and real-time on stage at the QCA
before an audience of several hundred.

Tutor - Firmware Director 6 Workshop
Victor Zalakos, former director
of Firmware (multimedia software distributors) and the most recognised
Macromedia Director expert in Australia, conducted this training
session at Griffith University.
I was invited to provide assistance in training the
20 participants in a variety of advanced skills including score
animation, complex lingo coding and Shockwave.

Design consultant
Briggs Peterson Buhr Architects.
In this freelance role, I provided illustration, graphic design,
digital imaging and print-co-ordination services to Briggs Peterson
and Buhr Architects for a number of successful project tender submissions.
Strict deadlines and design standards had to be met in each case,
and I was also asked to develop a new corporate identity for BPB
including print materials, promotional brochure and flyers for marketing
purposes.
My first commercial
website was hand-coded and progressed from initial prototype
to finished product in less than 3 weeks. Extensive custom media
creation included digital compositions, icons, headers, interface,
a rendered 3D logo animation, interactive glossary and provision
for future integration of QuickTime VR walkthroughs.

Briggs Peterson Buhr Architects
Briggs Peterson Buhr Architects required commercial-quality photographs
of their latest projects for marketing purposes. I was commissioned
to travel to a variety of local and regional sites and take appropriate
external and internal shots for integration into print materials.

Lead designer/ Project leader
CyberPork CD-ROM (Griffith University)
This Griffith University promotional CD-ROM was developed in a
short timeframe (3 weeks) for use at the Brisbane Tertiary Studies
Exposition. The aim was to produce a visually captivating and dynamic
interactive application that would create interest amongst potential
future students of the degree.
The introduction consisted of a two minute, fast-paced MTV-style
video which I produced over 3 days in Director 5 synchronized to
an electronic soundtrack. This is followed by a series of high-tech
information sections about the course, including examples of student
work.
